Make-up artist John Chambers died on Saturday 25th August 2001 leaving a legacy of famous make-up transformations behind him. Perhaps best known for the astonishing ape make-up in the Planet of the Apes movies, Chambers was also the genius behind make-up effects in Lost in Space. In particular, his transformation of Bill Mumy into Dr. Smith for the episode The Space Destructors will go down in history as one of the best make-up effects in the Irwin Allen productions. He received an honorary Academy Award for his outstanding makeup achievement for the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes as well as several Emmy nominations for his television work.
