Flying Sub FS-1 Filming Miniature
Flying Sub "FS-1" Filming Miniature from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (CBS, 1964-1968). Vintage original Flying Sub filming miniature introduced in Season 2 of Irwin Allen's sci-fi adventure. The manta ray-shaped futuristic mini submarine was launched from a berth beneath its mothership, the SSRN Seaview, and could jet out of the water to fly like an airplane. Crafted of sturdy fiberglass, wood, resin and acrylic components painted in signature yellow with blue and gray trim. Through the clear plastic front window there are two silhouette figures standing in front of rudimentary cockpit-tech detailing. Hidden guide-tubes are embedded at the center of each "wing" through which suspended wires would provide the illusion of flight. This 18-inch scale model was used in conjunction with the 17-ft. Seaview filming miniature as the Flying Sub departed and returned to its mothership. The organic, manta ray-inspired design of the Flying Sub so captivated the public that in 1966 Aurora released a plastic model kit that became enormously popular. Without question, one of the most highly desired filming miniatures from 1960s science fiction. Measures 18" x 18" x 4.5". This screen used model comes with the original vintage 20.25" x 20.25" x 18.5" display case as exhibited in Irwin Allen's office. The model is supported by a metal stand secured by four screws at the bottom rear of the ship. A 6v battery in the base illuminates the headlights, interior cockpit and the rear engines glow red with gel inserts. Exhibits expected production wear and age with minor scuffs, surface cracks and minor touch-up of the paint and bottom circular turbine detail is loose . Display case acrylic cover has a 5" crack and exhibits some crazing; the wooden base has chipping and scuffing to black paint. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
