Underwater Filming in Fox Backlot Moat
Filming the 1961 movie Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea underwater scenes in the tank on the 20th Century Fox backlot. The "tank" was in fact the Moat which was used for the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Movie (1961) and TV series (1964-68), plus Lost in Space (1965-68).

Picture from the American Cinematographer magazine dated September 1961. 'The "Tank" on the back lot at 20th Century-Fox studio, Hollywood where much of the underwater action for "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" was shot. To provide illumination that would penetrate depths of water, huge Brutes were mounted on parallel in background.'

Note: Brutes, or "brute arcs" are daylight-balanced lighting units used in filmmaking.
